With this almost 80-minute compilation, Mike Carss comprises six tracks written between 2011 and 2015 that were contributions to various netlabel compilations along three unreleased tracks.
Opener “Such Fleeting Advancement” (Stoic Mix) kicks off with a much stronger, sequenced/rhythmic sound contrary his regular velvet-flavored, emotive-textural music. The latter is featured beautifully on the other eight tracks, all dressed with smooth spiraling, lush pastel-colored soundscapes. An exception is the piano-led “The spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings” with just a few textures surrounding it.
Some darker undercurrents mixed with flowing ethereal pads can be heard on “Fading Comfort” while melancholy slumbers gently through the leaves of “Nearly Forgotten”. “Holding the Moment” is another very nicely executed piece with piano, smooth guitar licks and an overall ethereal/symphonic sound design. After that the album rounds out nicely with the atmospheric winterscape “Pinegrove” that simply fits as a glove in Altus’ traditional sound.
