Amir Baghiri – Rooms
CD, Arya, 2001

“Rooms” is a cd-box from this sympathetic German/Iran-based ambient musician, filled with 3 cds, and released in a strictly limited edition of 500 copies.

The first pieces and ideas of this music were born in 1996, but have remained in Amir’s mind all that time, until it was time to finish this special project. The subject “Rooms” is put in three dimensions, and even heads for a philosophical point of view while listening.
“Rooms” is some absolute ambient music the listener should absorb.

The first cd contains the track “Inner Rooms”(73:58), and is a heavy one: it starts with six 6 minutes of didjeridoo before it flows into a strange landscape of dense ambient textures within spectral voices from Jim Cole and a broad variety of ethnic percussions and effects.

The second cd contains “Real Rooms”(74:23), taking off with the dense atmospheres of the Big Bang, then drifting in a strange ongoing passage with shifting sound layers from both organic and electronic nature. This could be the soundtrack for a shamanic ceremony, as it has textures like Roach’s “Origins or Artifacts”.

And then we come to the third and last cd featuring the extended track “Spaces in Between”(68:22), of which the composer himself says to be his favourite: a cave without a bottom.
And yes, this is great music that really goes underground. Vast layers of shifting and burning soundscapes take you on a trip into subconciousness, territory where magic takes over.
Music that lingers in the same high-quality soundscape tradition as Steve Roach managed to create on “Dreamtime Return” as its kindred successors. But what else can you expect using track titles such as “Airtribes”, “Eyes of Stone” or “Liquid Cave”. This last cd really hits the ceiling, and is an absolute beauty by all means.

“Rooms” is a very sophisticated production, featuring an outstanding collection of high-quality ambient that should be suitable for all those who want to take a further step into the deep….
