Gandalf – Colors of a New Dawn
CD, Real Music, 2004

The music of the Austrian multi-instrumentalist Gandalf, aka Heinz Ströbl, has always been something special to me. But after his switch from Sony to the Sattva label his music became more and more new age with influences of world music.

Since his former album, his music is released by the US-label Real music, known from their soft, easy-listening like music. Well, the content of his new instrumental cd links ups with that concept.

The music is charming and romantic, Gandalf expertly fuses the well-known electronic and acoustic instruments of his former albums. And his typical synthesizer-solo is there briefly as well.

The overall atmosphere is sweet and decent, above all it’s background music. The only vocal appearance is in the third track, but I can’t say it’s that tasty.

I only found a spark of his old magic in the short track “Flowers along the way”. The rest of the doesn’t touch me much.
