CD, Groove Unlimited, 2017

Already having a successful back catalogue of solo and collaborative releases, accomplished synthesist Gert Emmens hereby brings us the first chapter of the 2-volume sonic narrative “Stories from Floating Worlds”.

During the creative process of shaping the four lengthy tracks, Gert applied mainly old analogue synths and added some tasty acoustic drums to some passages. The Emmens-approach and sonic fingerprint hasn’t changed much although I feel the blend of slower and faster paced sections and the implementation of atmospheric spaces moving sideways in one track has been done very well.

What I especially like about the album’s outcome are the non-rhythmic soundscape parts such as the introduction on the opening piece and the haunting, darker flavoured spherics featured on the overall strong “Why it was better to stay inside until dawn”. It’s here the composer submerges beautifully into deeper lands or dwells in lovely farscapes, something happening as well on the final track (despite the weird-ish sounds fading out). With this one Gert did another fine job with a very nice overall atmosphere.
