THE BLACK DOG
Radio Scarecrow
CD, Soma Recordings Limited, 2008
|
|
The Black Dog is a techno-ambient project from the UK consisting of Ken Downie and the brothers Martin and Richard Dust. The output of "Radio Scarecrow", mixed as one continuous sequence, fits nicely in the framework of intelligent, refined and detailed IDM-electronica with subtle elements and twists, rounded out with a pristine production and mastering.
Next to shorter tracks (with a more experimental rim) found towards the end of the record, the sound of the first half reveals influences of Kraftwerk ("Train by the Autobahn") and the classic Warp IDM sound. Despite the mysterious, sometimes strange and dark veil hanging over the music, the music has a strong attraction within its core.
The excellent mixture of Detroit technobeats, samples, fx’s, textures, swirling melodies and occasional bleeps doesn’t miss its pleasing effect. The contemporary and cinematic music of "Radio Scarecrow" is simple, slightly eclectic and of a direct, always compelling nature. Recommended.
