JAVI CáNOVAS
Hidden Path
CD, Groove Unlimited, 2014

I for one think it great to see a Cánovas-album again as a factory-pressed cd after a large list of digital-download only and cd-r releases.
On this 70-minute/six track newbie, Mr Cánovas doesn’t stray far from his trademark of classic, sequencer-driven music, though here sticking to rather concise pieces and one short piano track. The sequencer patterns are fired off in a beautiful ebb and flow, building intensity while at times also getting quite complex. If I had to pick a favorite, it would be the peaceful "Through the Mountains" rounding out the album, featuring a beautiful interplay of moody synths and piano with a smooth wavering mellotron on top.
All in all, "Hidden Path" offers skillfully, solid and well-executed made Berliner School inspired music electronic music that many fans of the genre will like and appreciate quite a bit.
