More than just a Seagull
CD, Seagull Music, 1988
This recording was originally composed in 1983 as the soundtrack for the multimedia-performance "Jonathan Livingston Seagull" in Vienna, Austria. It was one of the albums released on Heinz Strobl’s own label Seagull Music, and it also was his US debut.
The music is a bit different from his other music around that time: no computer nor sequencers were used as Gandalf turned to a lot of acoustic sounds of acoustic guitars, piano and bells next to healthy dose of mellotron and only a few synthesizers.
The five tracks on this spiritual album all breath a very relaxed and open atmosphere with its sounds of the sea mixed with bird calls, which lend it a slight new-age touch. The second track "Sky, Sea and me" is an improvised live track on acoustic guitar recorded in 1986 which comprises parts of several album tracks.
Until today, this "natural" sounding music production remains something special to listen to. This classic album was re-released in 1994, so it shouldn’t be too much trouble to find a copy of this gem by this skilled Austrian painter of musical landscapes.
