The Second Sun
CD-R/DIGITAL DOWNLOAD, Private Release, 2015
"The Second Sun" is the second album by UK-synthesist Matthew Stringer, who some might know from his well-rendered collaborations and albums as Perge with countryman Graham Getty.
This follow-up to his 2009 efffort "Your World is but One" again was inspired by the idea of order or structure coming from chaos. Although I’m not familiar with this debut, I almost immediately recognized a narrative form of electronic music.
While still founding this music in the retro domain (think classic TD), Matthew takes things in a different direction, painting various imaginary spheres while implementing brief passages of spoken and dialogue on a few spots. Maybe one of the finest pieces on the album is "Air", a lush 18-minute exercise starting out with contemplative piano and evolving gently into a grander scale with sequences surfacing smoothly along some soloing in the second half.
All in all, "The Second Sun" makes a jolly nice listen and a recording I’d like to recommend wholeheartedly. The download edition includes an extra bonus track ("Retrospect") not on the CDr-version.
