Steve Roach – Places Beyond: The Lost Pieces 4
CD, Timeroom Editions, 2004

This is the fourth collection from Roach’s Timeroom-cavern, offering a nice cross-over collection of fractal and organic groove music next to deep end atmospheric and ethereal music. It’s not just a collection of outtakes and pieces that didn’t make it to other cds.
Steve explains: “Many times I find some of the most expressive pieces keep coming after the momentum of a project keeps going after the cd master is complete. Or sometimes the pieces are leading into a different direction of the project at the time…and sometimes I will simply create a piece that is all to itself”.

The albums takes off with the great textural piece “Distant Signals” before we move into the rhyhthmic, groovy “Trancefusion”, which pays debt to the the “Blood Machine” period with Vir Unis.

Fractal grooves work their ways in more slowed-down pace in “Serpent’s Birth”.
“Resolution Point” enters tribal ambient territory as we travel through darker shades and foggy spaces. Of course, a piece with his soulmate Vidna Obmana is featured as well: “Calm before the Storm”. It’s an organic sounding composition with some rainstick.

The last three tracks on this album delve into deep space. “Slow Rapture” is taken from the no longer available Mirage-sampler “The Ambient Eclipse”.
The nice morphing “Contained …Sustained” drifts in its own deeper lands. The final track is “Light of Day”, elegantly floating over textural plains.
