Vangelis – El Greco – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
CD, Universal Music Greece/Polydor, 2007

December 2007 saw the release of the soundtrack “El Greco” to the motion picture by Iannis Smaragdis, for which Vangelis collaborated with The Choir of the Greek Radio and Television.

The album is divided in 18 parts of very nicely sculptured musical miniatures, making up 46 minutes of symphonic and emotional music which features many beautiful characteristics of Vangelis’ music of the last decade.

“Part 1” features the grand, majestic theme, in which choir and synthesizer textures match marvellously. On the cd, a couple of tracks seamlessly flow into each other, keeping up the created emotional atmosphere a bit longer.
There’s e.g. “part 4”, which contains some clear traces of the closing track of the previous El Greco album, or the uplifting sound of harp and strings in “part 7”

Parts 5, 8 and 11 are traditional songs from Greece, to which Vangelis added his masterful textures.
The album closes with the engaging end title, a piano version of the theme accompanied by the soft humming choir.

It’s the warm, romantic, introspective and sometimes even heavenly sound that makes this music soundtrack stand out and shine all the way.
An excellent and highly recommended piece of work which makes me really anxious to see the movie for which the music was composed.
