Aes Dana – Inks

CD/Digital Download/Lp, Ultimae Records, 2019

“Inks” sees Vincent Villuis embark on another exploratory journey through texture-rich atmospheres, digitally manipulated soundscapes, and meticulously controlled rhythms. While the album retains the distinctive sonic identity of Aes Dana, it also represents a somewhat unusual direction compared to his previous releases, revisiting the more beat-oriented aspects of his work while maintaining a strong foundation in deep, immersive ambient.

As expected, the production and mastering are outstanding. Villuis combines intricate glitch textures, crisp sonic details, and immersive downtempo rhythms with the precision and depth characteristic of intelligent dance music (IDM). Subtle developments in his sound are evident throughout the album, particularly in the slightly faster breaks and deep, tightly defined basslines. These elements lend the music a renewed sense of momentum without compromising its atmospheric depth.

Fans of the classic Ultimae sound will find plenty to appreciate in the title track, “Inks”, and “Akacie,” both of which capture the label’s signature blend of melodic downtempo and expansive atmospherics. “Otherness” hit the techno-dance button while “Nuphar Log” introduces distinct dub influences, adding another layer of depth to the album’s sonic palette. In contrast, “Peace Corrosion” relies on a minimalist yet powerful beat-driven approach, demonstrating Villuis’ ability to balance rhythmic intensity with subtle textural detail.

The final section of this 82-minute release shifts towards more contemplative territory. “The Gradual District” and “Juniper” unfold as moody, futuristic ambient soundscapes, subtly infused with downtempo currents. These closing pieces provide a measured transition away from the album’s more rhythmically driven passages, reinforcing the contrast between immersive ambience and carefully structured beats.

Verdict: 3 stars.
