In the past years I’ve heard quite a bit of the works Chris Bryant and Don… Tyler created under the Ascendant moniker. For years, “Excursions In Light“ (together with “Into the Void”) was previously only available as an exclusive ambient release through the duos Patreon portal. As the latter was put to an end and to meet ongoing demand of their fanbase, Tyler & Bryant decided to re-release them in 2023 in remastered form. Contemporary, spatial and mainly rhythmic/sequencer-driven electronics are served on the 9-part/70-minute spaced-out outcome where melody plays a less important role. Occasionally, it leans slightly toward down-tempo, like “Part 7”. Overall, the music feels spacious yet full of life: depth and space is achieved here through a deep understanding of the frequency spectrum and how to utilize it so. And like the other Ascendant recordings, “Excursions In Light“ is engineered very well and with a focus on detail. Nice going, both of you. Rating: between 3.5 and 4 stars. |
