Ok, please journey back with me to October 1997 when Ashra played at “KLEMdag 1997” in Nijmegen, a still memorable event. “Sauce Hollandaise” contains 3 lengthy tracks live on stage by the quartet Manuel Göttsching, Lutz Ulbrich, Harald Grosskopf, and Steve Baltes on that occasion. What’s featured here is a celebration of classic Krautrock: an enticing mix of psychedelic space music with lots of repetitive patterns. Here, a proper dose of progressive electronics merges with Manuel’s space-out guitar work and Mr Grosskopf’s dynamic drums & percussion. The 25-minute, quite groovy opener “Echo Waves” (taken from Göttsching’s 1975 solo album “Inventions For Electric Guitar”) makes some true trance-inducing and energetic stuff, certainly when Manu takes off with some classic rock solos on the 31-minute track. The live version of “Twelve Samples” (from the album “Walkin’ the Desert”) heard here -it’s been stripped of its vocal overdubs and stands out for its dynamic drums and percussion- suits my personal taste much better. On the final piece, “Niemand Lacht Rückwarts”, Harald fires all engines on his drumkit in the first half before things shift to a dreamier realm with another cool and emotive Göttching solo. |
