Audioasis – Audioasis

CD, Private Release, 1995

Here’s another obscure CD I rediscovered in my collection recently. I remember I ran into it on James Johnson’s Zero Music website, which took care of distribution for it back in the day.

Audioasis turns out to be the Australian duo Peter Beeby (synths and sax) and Shaun Pilkinton (guitar and bass), and their eponymous debut album from 1995. There are nine tracks, the long descriptive opener of about 16 minutes reminding me somewhat of the German new age music of Volker & Zöbelin, but with what I consider to be misplaced sax and guitar contributions. Fortunately, the sax is absent from the rest of the album. The following track, “Riding the Iceberg” is much nicer and also has a descriptive, slightly cinematic character, while the following fourth piece, “An Irishman in Brazil”, and the fifth, with its flat flute sounds, descend to a sad musical level à la John Huling.

The rest of the album also failed to captivate me. In my opinion, the best track of the 50 minutes of music on offer is the solo-like, cinematic, and soothing “Lost at Sea” (4:51), on which Beeby can be heard beautifully on synths.

Back then, the US reviews were mostly favourable, but I am a lot more moderate in my opinion, bearing in mind that this is not pure EM. Aside from that, I realize it will be tough to track down a copy of the album these days.
