In collaboration with the ambient label Hypnos, Michael Bentley’s Foundry label started releasing cd ep’s in mid-August 2002, a mini-cd with a playing time between 15 and 30 minutes. San Francisco resident Ben Swire kicks off the series with “Equilibrium”, featuring four tracks that all clock around 4-5 minutes. Well, I kind of expected experimental music, but was pleasantly surprised by 17 minutes of pleasant ambient atmospheres with light beats, rhythms, and careful melody in which sharp, crackling effects are integrated. This is particularly true of the first two tracks. On “Knot” and “Score” the mood becomes somewhat gloomy but not in an unpleasant sense. Imagine music in a similar mood as Pieter Nooten and Michael Brook’s “Sleeps with the Fishes”. All in all definitely an ambient recording to keep in mind… |
