Beyond Berlin – Meandering Tear
CD/Digital Download, Groove Unlimited, 2025

Too often, I have the feeling I’m rather late in reviewing certain albums that have been sitting on the ever-existing stack of music.

With their previous releases, Beyond Berlin has shown they are something special in the electronic music scene and celebrate the Berlin School style in particular. As the liner notes state, “Meandering Tear” was created with an accelerated pace as Martin Peters and Rene de Bakker were invited to play at E-Day 2025, so having something new available by then had top priority. Despite more pressure present during the creative process, the outcome is another labor of love for analogue-based EM (so warm sounds are guaranteed) as well as a passionate/emotive affair throughout.

The joyous, sparkling “So Long” is a highlight as far as I’m concerned, with its lovely sequence patterns among soaring textures and leads. The latter also make their way on the 22-minute “Walhalla”, another comfy piece evolving gently over time while painting emotive views and unhurried sonic farscape. “Anthem” proves a tad more active, slightly euphoric exercise with warm pads, while the title track, concluding the release, evokes a happy, heartwarming realm. Again, well done, gentlemen!
