Black Mellotrons – Tripmuziek

Digital Download, Doombient, 2026

Ok, aficionados of ambient, drone-based electronic music created with real mellotrons should pay attention here: “Tripmuziek” contains a series of five recordings Stephen Parsick made once upon a time, on his own or as collaborative efforts with Klaus Hoffmann-Hoock (aka Cosmic Hoffmann), to be used for future concert performances or albums. Some of the tracks were only retrieved as sketches, which had not been used for various reasons; others were reconstructed completely.

Deep, fluid and slow-evolving mellotron textures already fill the 18-minute space on “Black hole son”, a lovely and smooth cosmic drift accompanying the listener while venturing into the galactic expanse. The 19-minute “Poignancy and beauty b2” -merging mellotron with spaced-out guitar- proves a kind of Indian-inspired Mind over Matter track on the first half, then venturing in more ethereal, psychedelic-ish territory. A further minimalist approach and pastoral sound palette is found on “Schwebemann”.

The mellotron-only meditation “One last Dawn” can sit nicely next to “Poignancy and beauty b2”, offering a fluid, calm chord progressions. “Tripmuziek” rounds out with the 19-minute “The Long Walk”, another calm ambient soundscape meditation, opening with water washing ashore before sets of warm, slow-evolving mellotron textures merge with some environmental sound recordings entering the stage very nicely.

Kudos to Stephen for the effort in making this fine atmospheric music see the light of day after so many years.
