With “The Coils Suite”, the composer’s second release in 2025, Brendan Pollard puts an end to an impressive list of retro-electronic music, whether solo or together with other kindred soulmates. Or in Brendan’s own words, “this old dinosaur is kind of retiring and enjoys the studio without the pressure of expectations of new music”. Well, with the strong opening piece, the 24-minute “Stutter”, Mr Pollard already pulls out another ace out of his sleeve: a pure celebration of vintage ’70s Berlin School electronics and the soundings of TD “Ricochet” in particular. “Parasites” is next, a 15-minute more psychedelic-ish outing, followed by the lovely “Conduit”. As far as I’m concerned, the attentive blend of deep sounds, smooth solo voices, and interlocking sequencer patterns displayed here can all sit comfortably next to “Stutter”. The 8-minute “Embers” puts a moody ending to this final chord that revisits the composer’s sequencer roots. |
