Aficionados of highly cinematic, lavishly colored, and textured electro-acoustic music made with modulars should pay attention here. “Paradise Lost” is Chris Meyer’s richly rhythmically infused release with an overall exotic edge. As before, each track on the release started life as a live performance and was edited and overdubbed into album form at a later stage. From start to finish, the cinematic storytelling nature of the compositions is often symphonic, with a clear shape and arc that takes you on a journey and then gently lands you back on earth. This time around its the sophisticated combination of synthesizers -both modular and virtual- with numerous acoustic elements (including flute, cello, piano, and handpan) as well as field recordings (thunder, birds, surf, and fire) that put their mark here. On top of that, the sparkling sound design proves rich in percussion, including gongs, cymbals, shakers, rattles, frame drums, udu, and deep bass drums.
