“Passage” is a collaborative beat-less and mostly sequencer-less ambient electronic music work between Chris Meyer’s Alias Zone and acclaimed ambient artist Robert Rich, offering an outcome that’s quite a bit different than Alias Zone’s previous albums. According to the promo blurb, Mr Meyer’s has been working on it off and on for the past four years. The core tracks for the album came out of an invitation to Chris Meyer to play a two-hour ambient concert as part of Currents Gallery 826’s Vibrant Pool exhibition. The overall concept of the four extended soundscapes is that of passing from one phase of your life to another, sonically blending cinematic, vaporous, yearning, and introspective atmospheres. In particular, Robert’s plaintive solos illustrate a series of slow-evolving as well as meditative journeys featuring lush, organic landscapes and waterways, which weave their way through Chris’ backdrops of quiet industrial, occasionally darker-shaded and rather desolate-sounding decay. The latter certainly applies to “Horizonless” (that’s quite haunting in places), but I feel the workings on the closing piece “Afterlife” miss out a bit of direction. Overall, Rich’s improvised performances on Haken Continuum, PVC flute and a few other pieces of gear are notable, complementing Alias Zones synthetic-organic exploratory improvisations and additional percussion instruments. |
