Those familiar with the releases in recent years by this German musician will have found a more experimental/industrial approach merged with early ’70s EM soundscapes. The 60-minute “Aftermath”, which demanded a longer period to finalize compared to previous albums as well as involving a lengthier list of gear, doesn’t stray away from the aforementioned sound design formulae. I’d even say the “audio-movie in 14 chapters” is overtly primordial, profoundly dark, and -despite some dense sequenced sections- mostly drone-based. This all makes it (once more) a tough and heavy listen. I would have preferred some more vintage and upfront sequencing as heard on the seventh, ninth, and tenth tracks. The nice harmonic “textural dressing” featured on the latter piece is also more up my alley (instead of too many psychedelic hooks and wanderings as displayed on the final four pieces, taking things off-track). Rating: near 3 stars. |
