The last few years, Hans van Kroonenburg has been involved in various successful collaborations. “Saudade” -a selection of the best parts created during three days of recording sessions with the idea to make some music around the classic Yamaha CS-60- sees him join his fine talents with Peter Dekker (aka Däcker), resulting in a spheric outcome that sees a mix of various Em-styles along some prominent influences of Vangelis. It appears lots of the beautiful piano and mellotron parts found on the album are actually Peter’s work. A blend of calm, smooth soaring electronic meditation, sedate sequencing as well as a dash of classic/cinematic Vangelis, are found on “Commuovere” and “Yuanfen”, both clocking over 20 minutes. Chilled-out Blade Runner vibes surface nicely on the fine title piece before a slow spiralling sequencer sets in, followed by warm mellotron strings and assorted pads, together making up a lovely blanket of sounds. On the final track, the sequencing shift a tad higher and is more upfront, all dressed attentively with gentle choir and mellotron pads. Despite some occasional improvised hooks and angles, “Saudade” is worth checking out, especially if you like Skoulaman’s sonic approach/style and Vangelis. Keep it up, guys!
