“Terra Inhabitata” is the debut album by New Zealander David Anthony Clark, who seems to draw a lot of musical inspiration from his numerous tours of our globe, taking a particular interest in the history and music of ancient cultures. His musical style (David himself calls it “neo-primal”) bears some affinity to that of label owner Jon Mark, and it contains a similar kind of tranquillity and restraint. “Terra Inhabitata’s” music celebrates the mystical beauty of ancient New Zealand and its wildlife before the arrival of human habitation. In a beautiful way, David manages to fuse ancient Maori flutes and original ethnic instruments (or samples thereof) with sounds of nature and electronic sounds. This could serve well as an accompaniment to a nature documentary about pristine New Zealand, I reckon. |
