The 79-minute “The Spirit of Light” marks the second volume in the “Best of David Wright” series, featuring another selection of smooth-melodic, rhythmic but also light-weight (space)music.
I can’t help not being fond of the sweet, profound new age edge and spiritual feel embedded in David’s re-recorded and remastered output contained on this release.
The Oriental flavours of “Forbidden City” are already a first sign of that. But especially the lengthy third track “Lazy Heaven” (featuring Geigertek) is subject to that, and reminds me of the “big mistake” space musician Jonn Serrie made years ago when he started to incorporate chill-out and flat-out romance into his music, making the outcome end up as jazzy flavoured elevator music.
“Romance 89” and “Ocean Watch” following up on this track don’t change that. “Crystal Rain” though is a nicely executed solo piano piece in the tradition of David Lanz. The final piece on the overall relaxed sounding album is the 25-minute “Illusions”, again remaining too “light”, new agy and one-dimensional to leave a real impression, despite the loud solo voice and sax.

All in all, this segment of Mr Wright’s music is just not up my alley.
