Deep Sky Divers – Incandescent

CD/Digital Download, Any Robin Hood, 2004

This is the final CD of the duo Jon Short and David Jones from Northern England (of which Jon has written & performed most of the tracks), who still impresses me with their album “Highlands and Skylands”.

The album kicks off with the beautiful, typical DSD-sounding “Skylander”, followed by the formerly released bass-driven track “Momentum”. After the short piano interlude “Lost without you”, things remain intimate with the new age soundscape “Distant Sound of the Sea”, which clocks in at eleven minutes. This track also contains the typical elevating DSD-sound. “Music inspired by the middle ear”, though, is a weak one with its overall easy-listening feel. The same goes for most of the tracks that follow, as they all stick to new age territory with some whistles and fretless bass.

The title track is a nice and intense piece building symphonic realms, but it should have lasted much longer. The melancholic “Gradually becoming cyclonic” is a slowly evolving piece with shipping forecast messages. In the end, the mixed bag of music styles on this album didn’t leave as much impression as I had hoped for. DSD should especially beware they don’t get too new-age. Rating: 3-
