Digital Dream – Sternenmusik

Mc, Private Release, 1990

Back in 1987, German composers Andreas Morsch and Axel Stupplich began creating electronic music together under the name Digital Dream. With only a very limited setup at their disposal, the duo would get together twice a year, connect all their gear, and record their music onto DAT using two Atari ST1040 computers.

The concept recording “Sternenmusik” consists of two parts, lasting 29 and 27 minutes respectively. Well, these early pieces capture the duo at the very beginning of their electronic music journey, working with minimal equipment and virtually no effects. Despite these limitations, the music unfolds into a varied, cosmic-inspired soundscape, filled with lush melodies and a warm, atmospheric character. The closing section of Part 1 bears a slight resemblance to the work Peter Mergener was producing around the same period. Following the release of the cassette, which was limited to approximately 20–25 copies, “Sternenmusik” was intended to be performed live at the Planetarium Erkrath. Unfortunately, the planned concert never took place. Despite that, “Sternenmusik” captures the vintage style of the late 80’s very well, providing plenty of space to explore soundscapes all flowing nicely into each other.

I can only hope that the music from this fascinating album will one day be made available as a download.
