Dystopia – The Second Dawn

CD/Digital Download, Origo Sound, 1998

Electronic music that addresses worldly/philosophical issues along with the status of science and technology in modern society, is usually something special. “Second Dawn” by Finnish duo Pertti Gronhölm and Ismo Virta, alias Dystopia. This politically charged concept album focuses on a sombre but no less interesting form of thought-provoking ambient music that depicts the nuclear holocaust and its consequences. It is sombre, dark, contemplative music interspersed with short passages of documentary-like fragments that effectively reinforce the harsh message in a chilling manner.

At times, there is a symphonic revival in the music (“Core Melt”) while “Sands of Sinai” leans closely towards Synaesthesia. However, the two final pieces are the pinnacle in terms of desolate, post-apocalyptic yet oppressive atmosphere and impressively convey the album’s statement. Prepare for 74 minutes of quite bleak and well-executed ambient music tapping into the profound deep…

In 2015, the “Second Dawn” was re-released as a download. The latter differs slightly from the original as it features some additional documentary material drawn from various audiovisual sources.
