Forrest Fang – Radiance and the Receding Light

CD/Digital Download, Projekt Archive, 2026

The outcome featured on this double album -mastered expertly by Robert Rich- is another showcase of Mr. Fang’s rather unique hybrid style of electronic music incorporating ethnic influences from Asia, as such producing rich electronic textures of music that’s often complemented by assorted Western and non-Western stringed instruments, gamelan, winds, and percussion. Thematically, “Radiance and the Receding Light” explores the complex relationship between our Earth’s recurring cycles of light and darkness and the inherent beauty of both, inviting the listener on a travelogue addressing a variety of complementary and contrasting moods.

The quite minimalistic sonic panoramas on the opening disc “Radiance” -a succession of effervescent moods and short daytime stories- apply an array of evolving hypnotic polyrhythms along multiple dreamy, floating texture maps to evoke an emergent world of illumination and depth. The 27-minute “Resonant Spirit”, split in five continuous sections, sure is the centrepiece here. In this ambitious effort, echoes of his previous work shine through clearly in the immersive spaces dedicated to redefining the space-time continuum. As such, I feel this disc’s layered, minimalist sound design demands quite a bit extra of the listener’s commitment to take it in, best not all at once.

Now, the second disc focuses on longform ambient, offering three 20-minute pieces along with a final one of 10 minutes. They drift into the depths of the cosmic environs with very slow evolving and shapeshifting ethereal texture maps. Most of it though turns out too minimal to keep my attention.
