Contrary to Mr. Fang’s previous releases, this ambient-space album is a pure electronic affair without any acoustic instrumentation whatsoever. Instead, the 69-minute “The Oort Cloud Meditations” features expansive, brighter-lit drone soundscapes and open-ended textures all moving, evolving, and shapeshifting at an almost glacial pace. Mr. Fang says about the album: “I created this album over an intense three months. It started with a simple experiment that continued to evolve and spilled over into new pieces as the results grew more interesting and more sonically complex. I created electronic sounds that revolved around each other semi-randomly, with room for harmonies to develop organically from these interactions. I used melodies sparingly, subtly introducing alternate tunings at times to reflect different moods.” Well, vast, boundless spaces spread their wings and drift effortlessly into the infinite distance of the cosmic realm in gracious, ethereal, and enchanting ways. Fans of free-floating, transparent, and minimalist unfolding space ambiences like myself will be delighted to submerge into the five far-reaching, subdued dynamic movements. |
