Gert Emmens – The Nearest Faraway Place Vol. 3
CD, Groove Unlimited, 2010

This final chapter of the “Nearest Faraway Place” trilogy is brought to an end in a fashionable, but also expected manner. For many years, Gert’s output is known as typical and well-rendered mood music blending the warm sounds of analogues with vintage drums and encompassing solos.

On volume three, Gert has invited his friend Jan Dieterich to add some guitar solo’s to two parts of the recording, which in my opinion are a bit too prominent but still fairly well done.

The overall music though goes by gently, featuring some moody solo lines, evocative ambient pads and catchy Berliner School sequencer patterns which nicely complement the outcome of the previous concept recordings.
The album (of which Gert borrowed the title from the Beach Boys, one of his favourite bands) rounds out smoothly with a short collaborative track with Cadenced Haven.

Those who are already familiar with the previous volumes can’t go wrong on this one.
