The lovely ambient poetry featured on Budd & Eno’s classic album “The Pearl” (of which a good portion was recorded at Daniel Lanois’ studio in Ontario) is one of the works I keep returning to when I’m in need of something to ease the mind. It’s a beautifully rendered, quiet, instrumental work of subtly treated electric as well as acoustic piano music dressed with a subtle dose of environmental sounds, processed sounds, and an occasional bit of synthesizer. What “The Pearl” makes stand out are the notes dissolving into sonorous space, the music’s sonic depth and the stunning quality of the reverb. The evocative piano pieces on the tracks paint repetitive figures where melancholy, mystery, desolation, and a subtle veil of darkness all create a fully absorbing listening experience. After all these years, “The Pearl” remains an emotive gem, inviting the listener to some profound, gratifying, introspective moments and enchanting tranquillity. |
