The project Ice Planet 9000, formed in 2018, is the brainchild of Brent Zius and Karl Learmont. They pinpoint their music as “defying genre boundaries, blending elements of active dark ambient and classic Berlin School”, weaving intricate sonic landscapes using a mix of modern and vintage synthesizers, along with custom-built musical instruments. No sequencers or laptops were applied. One particular instrument to feature is the Blaster Beam (e.g. heard on “The Wave”) – a six-foot aluminium beam with 11 piano wires tuned to the low threshold of human hearing. “The Nebula Suite”, a two hour exploration into long form dark ambient all played in the moment, follows in the footsteps of their previous albums “Sequence 1: Glass Jar” (2022) and “Sequence 2: Star Chamber” (2023). Well, the type of ambient-space music featured on eight-track “The Nebula Suite” is of a tougher, slightly industrial-edged and cinematic-flavoured kind where rather stark yet abstract sounding sets of orbital atmospheres dressed with occasional unsettling (under)currents pass by along a dash of experimentation. As such it makes an unusual, yet haunting cup of cosmic ambient sceneries, its recordings setting and (re)defying new, quite unexpected and often rather heavy, alienating sonic boundaries. Overlooking the aforementioned, it’s fair to say this music is for those who like stark, adventurous ambient music. The physical edition of “The Nebula Suite” comes in a tri-fold wallet covered with hand-painted celestial sci-fi artwork and a zine booklet with details about the tracks, creative process, and gear used. |
