Irezumi – Downfall

CD/Lp/Digital Download, Brique Rouge, 2025

Compared to Manuel’s previous recordings, I’d say the outcome of Irezumi’s “Downfall” makes a much heavier and intense listen: it reflects the fractures of a mind in crisis and the process of psychological fragmentation, as such, taking a different approach. Made up of dark ambient, semi-stark, and psychedelic-ish soundscapes, it’s conceived as a soundtrack to an imaginary film: someone abandons everything overnight, sinking into paranoia.

Concept and narrative-wise it aligns with albums like Spyra’s “Hospital”, but here the music of the creative process is profoundly atmospheric and intrinsic in nature, aside from the deep sense of isolation, haunting, and abandonment felt throughout. The captivating “Escape” even turns out emotive-orchestral. In the last tracks, the listener is absorbed and made part of the process of release coming up as light at the end of the tunnel becomes apparent, like through the sonic rays of “Deliverance”. Attentive headphone listening is a must in my opinion.

As the press sheet also states, each release format (CD, vinyl, digital, containing 15, 12, and 13 tracks respectively) offers a different fragment of the story, reflecting the confusion at its core. Different paths are taken, but the goal remains the same: to heal.
