“Unity” is the debut album by ambient composer James Johnson, of which the music at the time of its initial release was compared with Steve Roach’s releases “Quiet Music” and “Structures from Silence”. This certainly applies to the first track “Forward”, a beautiful exercise in tranquil, gentle lingering and introspective music. The atmosphere and impact of the other three overall relaxed and melancholic pieces made me think of Brian Eno and Harold Budd, displaying a slow morphing tapestry of textures and sustained piano all travelling gradually through darker and lighter territory. Mr Johnson re-issued the album in January 2016 as a download which I presume and hope has a improved sound quality compared to the 1998 one. |
