One could say the 74-minute “Instant City” by accomplished musician Johannes Schmoelling is one of vision, joy, experience while also revealing a bit more of Johannes’ personal world and his development through time. In an interview, he once remarked the album in some ways is also the approach to his city where he’s been living for more than 34 years. Well, the emotive and often uplifting music captured on the 11 tracks is very mature, incorporating lots of space, introspection, along slices of melancholy and timelessness. The sounds heard here range from grand and epic to intimate, while the rhythmic section proves thorough and versatile as it aptly accompanies the evocative melodies. Furthermore, carrying on and off the sound and realm of ’80 TD, this contemporary work is a further refinement of the technique of creating a variety of mental expressions with irregular images and sounds/melodies. The mastering, production and mixing of this release are all impeccable. Rating: between 3.5 and 4 stars. |
