Klangwelt’s music has always sounded very well mixed and produced, and the outcome on Mr Arend’s sixth album “Second Nature” -another exploration into the broad field of contemporary, melodic synthesizer music- is no exception. Along traditional sequencing and melodic lines, many vocal samples and rocking elements are scattered over and make up its overall sound design. The release kicks off solid and strong on the first four pieces, where even a slice of down-tempo is thrown in. Especially “Empress” and “Molecules” impress me a lot. Things, however, take a strong turn in the mid-section of the album with the rather weird, awkward-sounding pieces “Never Again”, “Scaramanzia”, “Home”, and the up-tempo piece “Rush Hour”, which features strange vocalizations. “Anyway”, “Weightless Heart”, and “ Letters” see a return to Klangwelt’s more balanced, less restless music. This said, I think it best to keep in mind that no two tracks are the same on this 12-track/72-minute recording (as the composer stated about “Second Nature”). Rating: between 3 and 3.5 stars. |
