Kubusschnitt – The Cube

CD/Digital Download, Neu Harmony, 2000

Kubusschnitt is an electronic music project rooted in the Berlin School tradition, bringing together UK musician Andy Bloyce, Dutch synthesist Ruud Heij, Belgian composer Tom Coppens, and German musician Jens Peschke. “The Cube”, released during the heyday of the UK-based Neu Harmony label, follows the group’s debut album, “The Case”.

Compared to its predecessor, “The Cube” is a more structured and compositionally focused affair, featuring an impressive interplay of interweaving sequencer patterns, driving rhythms, rich vintage synth textures, melodic solos, and Andy Bloyce’s distinctive guitar licks. The result is a captivating blend of classic 1970s German electronic music, vintage Tangerine Dream-inspired soundscapes, and occasional nods to the unmistakable style of Klaus Schulze.

The album’s energy is particularly compelling on the 24-minute opening title track and the 28-minute “Alpha Three”, which appears in the second half of this 62-minute release. Both extended compositions showcase the band’s ability to balance pulsating sequences and propulsive rhythms with quieter, more introspective passages and atmospheric interludes, adding depth and variety to the overall listening experience.

With its imaginative compositions, authentic retro aesthetic, and expertly crafted electronic soundscapes, “The Cube” is a rewarding release that should not be overlooked by aficionados of classic Berlin School and vintage electronic music.
