Following his contribution to the concept album Planetarium Century, Jean-Luc Briançon, better known as Kurtz Mindfields, was approached by his friend François Aru, a science communicator, who introduced him to a new exhibition project at the Vaulx-en-Velin Planetarium. The project called for a musical soundtrack to accompany its exploration of the universe, built around three distinct sections: “Wide Fields”, “Circumpolaris” and “Deep Sky”. Inspired by this concept, Jean-Luc embraced the idea and composed three approximately 20-minute pieces. This time, however, he sought to move somewhat beyond the familiar Berlin School sound, exploring different musical territories with compositions inspired by the pioneering electronic sounds of early Vangelis and Jean-Michel Jarre. To bring his vision to life, he prepared an extensive palette of sounds using his custom-built SynthR4 and Synth10 synthesizers, NRsynth Moog Modular systems, the new DrumBox drum machine by oZoe, and the legendary ARP Pro-Soloist, an instrument famously used by Vangelis and Tangerine Dream on some of their early recordings. In June 2026, Jean-Luc dedicated 15 days to immersing himself in the exhibition’s imagery, translating its visual universe into a musical journey that gradually unfolds from Earth’s atmosphere towards the most distant reaches of the cosmos. This intensive creative period was followed by a further week devoted to carefully mixing the three compositions. The result is a captivating 60-minute space music experience, rich in warmth, atmosphere and carefully crafted electronic textures. Thoughtfully constructed soundscapes blend seamlessly with hypnotic sequencer patterns and occasional melodic solos, creating a fluid and progressive listening experience. Each composition invites the listener to drift further away from familiar surroundings, gradually surrendering to the vastness and mystery of the universe. A nicely done immersive work that pays tribute to the classic space music tradition while allowing Kurtz Mindfields to explore new sonic horizons. |
