After producing “Gossamer Wings of Illusion”, Mike Carss continued writing tracks with a similar vibe – enough for another album: “Musings of a Painted Sky”. The 61-minute ambient work touches similar ground, offering an enchanting sonic canvas of calm, slow unfolding textural landscapes and quietening, cinema-esque soundscapes, all characterized by profound emotive undercurrents. Occasionally, the drifting pads embody an elevating, dreamlike quality that I’ve come to appreciate a lot in Loneward’s music as well in the output under his Altus moniker. The string-like pads featured on “Echoes of the Dusking Heart” aren’t really my cup of tea, but they are soon forgotten when the fluid, soft breathing tapestries of “Shrouded Sighs” form a warm blanket of sound. And then there’s the 22-minute outro “The Final Hours”, a sour and sweet opus of lush swirling pads and slightly longing yet mourning textural vistas guiding us through an alternate reality, a place of solace, one that’s far away from -and the opposite of- the maddening world of today. Nicely executed, Mike! |
