Originally, “Dream & Desire” was recorded for a one-hour radio play at RIAS Berlin in 1977, but it never saw the light of day as an album. This stayed that way until 1991, when Bernd Kistenmacher seized the opportunity to release it on his label. What the listener awaits here is atmospheric, most gentle and intimate classic electronics where the warm sound textures shapeshift gradually and in an almost drifting manner. Here, the slow-changing tone and movement in the enchanting music is not created by a sequencer but by Manuel’s impeccable, highly focused, and cool guitar work. Although I can imagine that some may think the outcome sounds monotone. The two original tracks were enhanced by a third track, “Despair”, that lingers on in similar minimalist/evocative mood but this time in an upbeat style and the e-guitar sounding upfront. Rests me to say all aficionados of Ashra’s “New Age of Earth” should make sure to get a copy of this fine vintage recording. P.S. In 2019, Manuel would re-release the 61-minute album in a newly remastered and carefully re-edited edition on MG.art. |
