On “Dark Matter”, Michael Neil takes his listeners on an accessible galactic journey wherein lots of Berlin School retro elements are present. The sound design mirrors depth and vastness that’s even more impressive when the music and many sound effects are cherished through a good pair of headphones. There’s quite a bit of gradual movement and spheres going on in the lengthy cosmic soundscape, shifting from drifting and ethereal textures to lovely, rather soothing mellotron passages as well as rapidly sequenced sections, all pushing things forward while sound effects fly by on and off. The second half of “Dark Matter” proves calmer and soothing to the ears. Nice one, Neil. The physical version of the release presents the 65-minute outcome in one continuous go, while the download offers it in two separate parts of 27 and 38 minutes. |
