With this release, Stephen Parsick excavates music drawn from more than two and a half hours of deep-listening drone and mesmerizing dark ambient recordings that he created with Mathias Grassow between 2007 and 2008, who passed away in 2025. Across the four tracks, glacial drones, ominous textures, and occasional circular rhythmic structures slowly emerge from the silence. The music moves through shadowy, timeless, haunting, and hypnotic territories, consistently reaching toward the deeper end of the ambient spectrum. I felt this particularly strongly on the 28-minute “Grassow Parsick 3 rmxb1,” where synthetic pads and dense atmospheres gradually circle and meander toward distant reaches, joined halfway through by sparse, minimalist metallic rhythms. By contrast, the almost gracious “Grassow Parsick 6 rmxb1” briefly allows the atmospheres to open up, offering a more spacious and luminous moment. All in all, “Gratitude and Humility” is a release that rewards deeper, more attentive listening. It is not background music, but an immersive experience best approached with time, patience, and an open mind. |
