Those familiar with the works of this German musical philosopher, who sadly passed away in August 2025, will know of his massive discography, both solo and in various collaborations. The nine-part “The Fountain of Remembrance” comprises minimal drone music Mathias created between 1996 and 1998 using synths, sampler, singing bowls, voice, and effects. Already on the 19-minute opening part, he listener is drawn into a deep, mysterious, and overtly haunting netherworld of darkness and stark atmospheres shifting very slowly and meticulously. The minimalists’ sound design opens and brightens up on the following parts, occasionally to a hypnotizing, meditative, and elevating effect. The 70-minute outcome again proves spirituality and mysticism both held an important place in Mr Grassow’s life and as a mutual inspiration throughout. This recording is not for the faint of heart, but Grassow fans will want to have and cherish it for sure. Mathias would re-release the music in 2015 on his own website as a download. |
