“Portals” is the follow-up release to the artist’s 2024 release “Inner Cosmos”, at first glance taking the cinematic prog rock avenue at the opening, aside from displaying a more structured, rhythmic-driven sonic approach overall. This time around, Matt is joined by various guest musicians on e-guitar, bass guitar, and Chapman Stick on the 11-track outcome. The first half of the album is moody, comfy, and sparkling, most notably on “Synergy” and the rather laid-back “Ancient Astronauts”. The second half of the recording, starting after “Dune”, though, sounds less captivating to my ears. Somehow, the depth and atmospheric vibes seem to have disappeared; what’s left sounds bland and superficial. Not completely, as the fine final track “Departure” proves the opposite. Overall verdict: between 3 and 3.5 stars. |
