With “Funicular Prism”, composer and sound designer Matthew Florianz -who relocated to England some 14 years ago, adds his 19th album to his discography. Matthews’ modus operandi (still) is working intuitively, aiming to create “living” soundscapes that function as detailed worlds and quiet places for listeners to explore. Helped by his background as a game audio sound designer and field recordist, the cinema-esque ambiences found on the 10-track release all exists in the space between sound design, immersive soundscapes, and tonal progression. In there, some faint resemblances with Vangelis’ Blade Runner surface occasionally as well (e.g. “Dead Tree at The Starlight Interpass”). Throughout its high definition music -which incorporates quite a bit of abstract/experimental turns and twists along the way- the listener is drawn into an often estranged, wondrous or haunting scenery of imaginary places. As such a(nother) not that easy to digest aural representation, an assemblage of movement, sound design and slices of melody. Summarizing: expect broadening as well as in-depth (and almost beatless) soundscapes in support of a visual experience, whether imagined or directly associated. I guess fans of unearthly sonic landscapes like Stalker, On Land, and Nostromo as well as open-minded, adventurous ambient listeners should check this out. Verdict: Between 3 & 3.5 stars. |
