In June 2025, after many years of friendship and shared musical interests, sound explorers Michael Stearns and Robert Rich finally embarked on a collaboration to create an album together. They actually met back in 1986 when Stephen Hill introduced them to each other, being label mates on the acclaimed Hearts of Space label. In many ways, the 66-minute “Reunion of Breath and Waves” is a celebration of sounds as well as true sonic craftsmanship, merging the synthetic, acoustic, tactile, and organic to a cohesive, beautifully shaped, and thoughtful whole. Circular patterns arise and fade away while the listener enters a domain of elegant, meditative, profound, and cosmic spaces existing elsewhere and out of time. In addition, it appears there’s a kind of narrative storytelling along a gathering of spirits going on in the captivating sonic explorations that’s hard to pinpoint. Especially the second half of the recording moved me deeply with gems such as “The Deep Below” and “Inclusions”. “Reunion of Breath and Waves” proves an emotive aural journey of sonic mystery full of depth. Hats off to both of you. Website: robertrich.bandcamp.com You can see what reviews I have done of this artist on the Robert Rich artist page.
