“Sudden Dark” (subtitled “exercises in ambient minimalism”) is the first solo album by Hypnos label owner Mike Griffin, who is also one half of the ambient/experimental project Viridian Sun. He spent around two years working on the album. The artist describes his music as, among other things, “psycho-active soundscapes with a transcendental nature.” His compositions consist of remarkably heavy, extremely dark and impenetrable trance-like sound textures, carrying a haunting and ominous atmosphere that is certainly not something you casually put on in the background. Mike makes no use of rhythmic elements, instead focusing on dense walls of sound, occasionally featuring pulsating bass tones and, on one track, a brief spoken-word passage. There is nothing to criticize in terms of either production or sound quality. A release seemingly intended only for listeners who enjoy highly adventurous, exceptionally dark and claustrophobic electronic music, such as Rich’s “Stalker”. |
