This is the first collaborative project between label owner Philips and Jesse Sola (aka Numina). The duo presents a typical example of fluid ambient space music, in which the nine tracks (totalling around 73 minutes) remarkably do not flow into each other, as one might expect. Tracks 1, 2, 4, 6, and 8 consist of slowly evolving and drifting sound worlds (reminiscent of the first works by Liquid Mind, for example), while track 3 has a soft, groovy rhythm and some murmurs. The fifth track, “Surrender”, starts with introductory choral sounds, followed by swirling, more restless textures. “Into the Abyss” consists of deep space sounds, which, after about three minutes, are complemented by light percussion and ditto sequencing. In the title track, you virtually glide up and down the walls of the abyss. The closing track, “Alteration of Time”, is a somewhat strange, incongruous appendage: the bleepy sequencers, effects, and minimal tribal beats unnecessarily undermine the mood of the preceding tracks and, in my opinion, clearly seem to be an idea that originated with Philips. Technically, the sound is well put together, but in terms of appearance, the CD looks a bit sparse in relation to the excellent, compelling musical content (with the exception of the final track). |
