One might as well ask what the purpose of all those anniversary and special editions coming out of classic albums is, which also applies to our niche EM-genre. Does it contribute anything substantial? In this case, the answer to that is yes, as accomplished classic EM composer Peter Mergener presents us a clear, vibrant, and warm-sounding version of the Software album “Chip Meditation”, once again proving why he is still considered an inspiring talent. The promo blurb to “The Song of the Electrons” points out that this is a tribute to the roots of Peter’s musical journey and a milestone marking the 40th anniversary of the 1985 debut. I was never a fan of the Software project, for me their work sounded distant and cold to my ears. I thought I was happy when Mr Mergener decided to compose and release his own well-made music back in the day, which felt like a warm embrace from the start. Well, the sequencing is exemplary, soundscapes and transparent sound design are spot on, with some tasty beats accompanying it all on the second half of the album. (Another) Mission well accomplished, Peter. The download version of the album is handled by Prudence/BSC (although I recommend purchasing the physical product). |
