Peter Mergener – Phonetic Society
CD, Prudence/Cue Records, 2010

Over a decade or so ago, I lost interest in the music of this sympathetic and skilled German musician, as his output had become far too cheesy and uninspired in my opinion.

So what a happy surprise to see Mr Mergener successfully return to his personal artistic roots on the concept album “Phonetic Society”, which deals with the nowadays issue of information overload of especially sound for us modern human beings.

The recording also sees Peter use more electronics and less acoustic instruments than on his latest offerings, while he musically travels back to the captivating sound design found on his first five releases or so. The sequencers are nicely paced next to the great layering of warm textures, taking the listener on a trip into awareness.

This is by no means distant or cold electronic music, as it contains the right drive to stay interesting while it easily connects to the senses with its inviting, spacious character.
Well done, Peter!
